Students are engaged in learning about the scientific process and the incorporation of measuring skills. Students are introduced to terminology, laboratory materials, and basic concepts within Chemistry and Physical Science. The concepts listed below are covered during the 6th Grade School Year.
Scientific Method Posing Questions, Making Observations, Making Inferences Metric Measurement Lab Safety Laboratory Equipment Collecting and Graphing Data Atoms, Elements, Compounds Periodic Table Energy Transfers Density
7th Grade Concepts
7th Grade Science covers Life Science concepts. Students are introduced to how living things interact with their environment and survive.
Scientific Process Lab Safety Funcitons of all Living things Cells Evolution Genetics Body Systems
Regents Earth Science 8th Grade Concepts
This course will be based on the New York State Regents Earth Science Standards. Course content will include, but is not limited to, the following topics:
Astronomy - Terrestrial Coordinates (latitude & longitude), Earth's motions (rotation/revolution), Seasons (Insolation), Solar System, Deep Space
Meteorology and Weather - Weather Variables (Temperature, Moisture, Pressure, Wind), The Atmosphere (Measurements & Structure), Weather Systems (Air Masses, Fronts, and Cyclones), Weather Forecasting, Weather Hazards.
Geology - Weathering, Erosion, and Deposition, Landscapes and Topographic Mapping, Minerals and Rocks, Plate Tectonics, Earth's History.
A Regents examination is required at the end of this course. Students who complete this course will receive one unit of high school credit and their final course grade will appear on their high school transcript.
Science Research as an 8th Grade Elective
This course includes the development and implementation of scientific research procedures and instruction in the use of selected laboratory equipment and other essential technology. Students will participate in various science competitions and contests, such as the Long Island Science Congress and Science Olympiads. While this course is NOT a prerequisite for the North High School Research Program, it is a fine preparation for this form of scientific exploration.
